Huron Gifts took a little tour of the Canada Banana Farm this weekend. Located near Blythe in northern Huron County, the owners farm in a non-traditional style with temporary hoop barns and grow fruits that are non-traditional in this area of the world. Huron County is known for beans, corn, hay as well as cattle, sheep and even llamas not to mention lots of snow and -20C winters. Not only does Canada Banana Farm grown bananas, but they also produce papaya, lime and pineapple, too. Sold at the Clinton Farmer’s Market each Wednesday through the season, they also sell to restaurants in the area. Unlike grocery store fruit which is sprayed to ensure it will arrive in our local supermarkets looking fresh and inviting, Canada Banana Farms doesn’t spray their produce. While this lessens the shelf life, it results in fruit that they say tastes significantly better.
